Aleksi Buhler Ms. Lehmann English 2-1B 9 October 2019 The Crash It was sixth grade and I already had a sort-of job. I bottle fed baby goats and sheep for my mom’s friend, Tiffany. My dad also helped around her farm; he would go feed the all the larger animals and shear sheep. Tiffany had her kids driving a side by side around the farm to deliver things to the guys working, because she recently had surgery on her knee and couldn’t move all that well, but her kids weren't always there. One of the times they weren't there, Tiffany needed someone to deliver the workers their lunch, so she asked "Hey,Aleksi. Do you know how to drive a side by side?” “No, I've never driven one before.” “Oh, well here, I can show you, and I promise it’s not that difficult.” I hesitantly got in the side by side, and she showed me where the brake and gas pedals were and showed me all the gears I needed to know. Even though I still had no idea what I was doing, it started to look simple, and I was gaining confidence. Tiffany brought everything I needed out and said, “You got this!” I drove all the way up to where the workers were at and brought them their lunch. My dad was surprised when he saw me in the vehicle. “Did Tiffany teach you how to drive that?” My dad asked. “Yep, she just did.” “Fun; be careful!” “I know, I will be.” “Okay, well I'm going back. Talk to you later.” We waved goodbye, and I started driving. It was getting darkerby the minute. I turned my head for just a second, and when I looked forward, it was too late. I was heading straight for a pile of corn kernels at least 10 feet high. I tried to turn the wheel, but it wouldn’t turn quick enough, and I panicked.Instead of removing my foot from the gas pedal, I stomped down on it. I drove up the pile, and the side by side landed on its side.Right before it hit the ground, I stuck my foot out the door to stop myself from falling. The vehicle landed right on top of my foot, and I was stuck. I didn’t know what to do; not a single person was nearby. I start yelling at the top of my lungs, and after a couple of minutes, one of the workers ran to me. A few minutes later, he came back with my dad, and they flipped the side by side over me so I could get my foot unstuck. My dad carried me to one of the guys’ trucks, so I could to the hospital to get it checked out. The guy we were riding with felt a lot of pressure and was driving like crazy, so one of the other workers called an ambulance. They met us on valley road and took me to the hospital. Finally, after what felt like hours, we made it to the hospital. They got me straight into a room, and I had to wait for a doctor. After the doctor came in and asked a few questions, they took me to get x-rays. The results came back, and the doctor came in to tell me that if the side by side would have fallen any harder, my foot would be broken. I did break the growth plate. I got a boot and some crutches. They had my dad get me on a wheelchair to get out since I had never had crutches before, and my foot was sore. I got home around midnight and found it hard to sleep with a boot. With every move, my foot hurt. Time went by and the 3 months in a boot were the slowest months of my life. It was so boring, and I could barely do anything.I made it through and learned that next time I’m driving a vehicle, I should and will pay more attention to my surroundings.
